Topic: Invitation from Anna Zarkh to Participate in Math Education Research

Hello Everyone,

My name is Anna Zarkh. I am a PhD student in math education at UC Berkeley. I also work as a GSI in the math department. I’ve taught Math 53 in the last few years so you may have seen me around or even took the class when I taught it.

As part of my math education research I study communication practices in the teaching and learning of university mathematics. At the beginning of the semester, Dr. Charlesworth agreed to let me observe and document their teaching in this class for a study that will ultimately be part of my dissertation. I asked Dr. Charlesworth to forward this message on my behalf because I would like to invite you, as students in this class, to participate in my study as well.

Specifically, I would like to ask whether you’d be willing to let me include traces of your regular class participation (e.g, a question you asked in lecture, or a post on Piazza) as part of my study. This would not involve any additional action on your end besides agreeing to participate (by filling out this google form).

If you are willing to invest some of your time, I would also like to invite you to participate in an interview with me after the semester ends, in which I'll ask about your experience in the class. An interview will be approximately 45 minutes long and you will get a $10 Amazon voucher for taking part in it. Participation is confidential and completely voluntary. In particular, Dr. Charlesworth will not know whether you chose to participate or not, and it will have no affect on your grade. Note, if you want to be invited for an interview, be sure to write your email in the form so I would be able to reach out to you later.

More details about the study and its procedures can be found in the attached consent form. If you would like to participate in some capacity, let me know by filling-out this google-form, or by signing the attached consent form and writing to me directly at: annazarkh@berkeley.edu.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I would really appreciate your help!

Best,
Anna
